College Safety Tips: Protecting Your Valuables

Get Your Belongings Registered

You don’t want to spend too much time or energy worrying that your stuff will be stolen while at college because you already have enough to worry about. Something that may help relieve some of that stress is getting your things registered. The process is pretty simple, you just take pictures of the items and their serial numbers. You can either keep those in a safe place or with some universities the campus police will register your item in case of theft.

Protect Your Phone

With so much valuable information stored on phones nowadays, it makes it vital to keep your phone locked and password protected when you are not using it. Many apps remember your password and you don’t want any unwanted guest gaining access to that information. Placing a lock code or fingerprint protection on your home screen can deter potential thieves and in the unfortunate event that it is stolen, it can keep them out of any personal information.

Locked Down

Dorm rooms are common targets for thieves so you want to make sure that you keep your door locked and your valuables in a secure place. You may want to consider buying a small lockbox or safe to keep your expensive belongings safe.

Out of Plain Sight

If you leave your belongings out in the open you risk people walking by and taking something. Commonly stolen items like cell phones, wallets and keys should be kept out of sight at all times. It is also wise to keep those things on your person and not in a backpack or purse as they are at risk of being stolen if someone takes your bag.
