What to ask before you sign up for a home security system header image

When you own a home one of the first things you should look into is a security system to protect you, your family and property. Knowing that your home is being monitored and is secure will bring peace of mind and security for your whole family. There are so many options out there so choosing the right one for your situation and home can be difficult. We’ve compiled a list of 8 questions that you NEED to ask before you choose a home security system.

1. How long have they been around?

There are many new security companies on the market but just because they are offering lower prices doesn’t mean they are going to be the better option.  You should research how long a company has been in business and what their former and current customers are saying about them. There is usually a reason why some companies outlast others and it is usually because they offer superior value to their customers so don’t discount how important it is.

2. Can I trust the employees?

After you buy a security system a number of people are involved in the installation process including employees and sub-contractors. They will be in and out of your home so it is important that you are able to trust them to not only do a good job but to protect your private information. Often they will have access to a lot of information about your family like names and dates of birth. Most reputable companies will require that employees go through a background check to make sure that they can be trusted with this kind of information.

3. Does the home security system have a warranty or guarantee?

A good home security system can be expensive and purchasing one can be a financial risk. Most reputable companies will offer a warranty or guarantee of their services.

4. Do they have you sign a contract?

Most companies will have you sign a contract before they begin installing your system. You should spend time reviewing and familiarizing yourself with the terms of the contract before you sign anything. If there is something that you don’t understand or is unclear you should ask the company to clarify.

5. Does the system have everything you are looking for?

Different companies offer different systems and service and they can be quite different depending on the company. Make sure the company matches the needs of your family so you don’t sign a contract and then realize you didn’t get everything you need.

6. How will this affect my homeowner’s insurance?

Not only will a home security system help protect your family but it can also save you money on your homeowner’s insurance. Make sure before you sign a contract that your chosen company can supply you with the necessary documents to get this discount so you don’t lose out on any savings.

7. What advanced security features does the system have?

Technology is becoming more and more advanced and this is beginning to become more a part of our homes. You can now control your entire home from an app and automate many of the processes in your home to make life a little more simple. If these features are important to you then make sure that the company you select can offer these features.

8. If I move can I take my service and equipment with me?

Even if you aren’t planning on moving it is still important to find out if the home security system provider will let you bring your system with you if you do move. Every company is different and some may not allow you to do this so that is one thing to consider when looking for the right system.
