Common mistakes people make during a flood header image

There are many causes of flooding but one of the most common is when the winter snow starts to melt. Millions of people are affected by floods each year and depending on where you live there are a few things you should keep in mind to keep your home and family safe from flooding. It is great to know what the best things to do when there is a threat of a flood but there are also some common mistakes people make that you would do best to avoid in the event of a flood.

Don’t try and Drive Through Flood Water

When there is a flood, roads can become very hazardous and often times they are closed because they are too dangerous to drive on. Even if they are not closed it is still not a good idea to try and drive through it because the water will gather at the lowest point and you have no idea how deep it is. There is also the possibility of debris in the water that you can’t see and could cause damage to your car. It is best to try and find an alternate route of wait for the water to clear before you risk it.

Watch Out for Electricity

In the unfortunate case that floodwater gets in your home one danger you need to be especially aware of is electricity. If the water enters any electrical outlets it could electrocute you if you step in the water. If the power has gone out you still have to be cautious as this doesn’t necessarily mean your entire house has lost power. Be cautious around any wires that have been knocked down by the storm as there is a high likelihood that they are still live.

Don’t get in the Water

You can never be sure how deep the flood water is or how powerful the current is so its best to avoid getting in at all. That is unless there is some kind of extreme reason that you need to wade across it. Many people are injured or killed from trying to cross flood waters so avoid doing so at all costs.

Pay Attention to Warnings

Keeping up with weather forecasts is very important especially if you live in an area that gets extreme weather. When a storm is about to hit you should stay up to date on any notifications. Any evacuation alerts should be treated very seriously and if the area you live in is supposed to evacuate you should get out of there as soon as possible.
