What is a smart home and what does it do? Well, here’s a short list of smart home features:

  • Network-connected technology used for controlling all the various functions of your home.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection capabilities. This means being able to connect your smart home with your smartphone.
  • Ability to control functions like A/C, heating, lighting, appliances and sprinkler systems, and home security.
  • Controlled remotely or in-home via phone, tablet, or computer. A smart home can be operated with voice control and can be customly programmed to operate based on your schedule and preferences.

Some still see smart homes as very futuristic, but smart homes aren’t as futuristic as you might think. Even then, you may see getting a smart home automation system as something intimidating or that doesn’t fit your style. However, you’ll find that a smart home can fit any style and add a sense of protection and comfort.

If you are interested about installing smart technology into your home but aren’t sure yet, here are five features that might make you make the decision to get a smart home.

1 – Temperature Control

Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to deal with setting and resetting your thermostat every day? With a smart thermostat, you don’t have to worry anymore.

A smart thermostat uses sensors which are put in different areas around your home. These sensors automatically adjust your thermostat accordingly with how warm or cold your house is. Your smart home can even adjust the thermostat by learning your schedule and keep the house cozy when you’re home and regulating it when you’re away which can save you a lot of money.

2 – Lighting and Electrical

Smart bulbs use built-in technology far surpassing that of a normal light bulb. Smart bulbs range in features and capabilities. You can find some that regulate heat output, others that use motion detection, some change colors, and some can do all that and more.

Smart plugs or sockets can help you build out your smart home even more. Use these smart plugs/sockets to control household appliances like coffee makers and lamps.

You can even have smart app-enabled light switches that can allow you to control your lights in your house just via the app on your smart phone, even if you use traditional light bulbs.

Smart shades are also a great feature of a smart home that can also be controlled through your smart home app to let in some light or keep it out.

3 – Appliances and Sprinkler System

All of the capabilities we’ve discussed also go for other home appliances and even your sprinkler system.

Kitchen appliances from big name brands (GE and Whirlpool, for instance) are starting to use smart technology in fridges and dishwashers. Even washing machines and dryers are starting to use smart technology so you can control them through the mobile app or a WiFi connection.

Smart sprinkler controllers are easy-to-use and streamlines how you water your lawn. Some can even gather weather data and adjust when/for how long your sprinklers will go based on what weather is expected that day.

4 – Home Security and Protection

One of the biggest reasons people choose to have a smart home is for smart home security. Smart security systems aren’t too expensive like they used to be. They are also not very complex or hard to learn.

Smart locks and garage door openers allow you to lock and unlock your doors via a mobile app so you can secure your home even when you’re away.

Smart video doorbells use motion sensor technology which helps to show you when people come to your door and allows you to see who is at your door. You can also view the video through your mobile device.

Outdoor and indoor smart cameras alert you and send over live video feed to your phone and some even use night vision.

There are other smart security products and equipment such as motion detectors, flood sensors, smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, glass break sensors, and more.

5 – Entertainment

Did you know you can control all of your home’s entertainment systems through your mobile device? Well you can, and it will simplify your life greatly. Smart speakers, TVs, Blu-Ray players, and remotes can all be controlled via smart technology.
