How to Protect Yourself From Identity Theft header image

Identity theft is becoming more and more prevalent and it can happen anytime or anywhere. There are however steps that you can take to prevent this whether you are using the internet, out and about or even when you are home. Staying safe from identity theft starts with you but if you are aware of the potential risks and take steps to mitigate them, then you can feel secure in knowing that your identity is safe.

Shred Your Personal Documents

Though most of us receive our mail digitally now, many companies still mail things like bills and other important documentation. When going through your mail you want to be careful about what you are throwing away. A common tactic in stealing people’s identities is by going through their trash and looking for documents that have personal information. A paper shredder can easily solve this problem. If you shred your mail before throwing it out then there is no way for people to get that personal information. An added layer of protection is by separating your shredded documents into two separate bags which makes it almost impossible for people to steal your personal information.

Secure your Mailbox

Your mailbox is another easy target for identity thieves so you should take measures to protect your mailbox. If possible get a lock for your mailbox. You should also be aware of what bills you are getting and if there are any bills that are late or missing. Checking your mail regularly is to make sure you don’t miss anything. Also, see if you can digitally access your bill statements so you can tell if you are missing something.

With the prevalence of identity theft it is important to protect yourself from becoming a victim. For more on this subject, read the original article here.
